Zofran Off-Label
The FDA only approves drugs for specific purposes. When a drug is used for any other purpose, it is referred to as “off-label”. Doctors are allowed to prescribe drugs off-label, when they feel it is in the best interests of their patients. Drug companies, on the other hand, are not allowed to market their products for off-label purposes.
Zofran is sometimes prescribed off-label to treat acute gastroenteritis in children.
For many years, Zofran was also prescribed off-label to treat morning sickness in pregnant women. In 2012, the manufacturer reached a settlement agreement with the government regarding the marketing of several pharmaceutical products.
